Attended a Drag race
There is a part member family in the Branch. The Wife is the member and
a returned missionary and the husband is a nonmember with no interest in the
Church. They have a set of twins a boy and a girl age 8. When we first came out
on the mission we were told the wife became less active when the twins were
born, and had not been to church since. We visited her and got to know her and
her children a little, we had a prayer with her. I could tell at the time that
she was touched by the prayer. She started coming to church and Sister Anderson
invited her to women’s conference and she not only agreed to go, but said she
would drive. We have gotten to know the family some, but normally when we
visited the husband is out back working on cars. He is a well trained skilled mechanic
who had a very good job with a major car manufacturer, but wanted to have his
own business. So he has a transmission shop in the neighboring town. When he is
not fixing cars for other people he is working on cars or dragsters he uses for
drag racing. Often when we would visit, if we wanted to see him, we had to go
out to the shop to visit him. He shared with us a little about his drag racers
and we told him, that if he was racing on a Saturday sometime we would like to
go watch. Often times the races are on Sunday. He gave us a schedule, over the
summer it was pretty hot so we wanted to wait until it was a little cooler. So
we went and watched him race on the Saturday of the Labor Day weekend. They
have lots of rules in those races that I was not aware of, it was good we had
the wife there with us explaining all the rules.
