A Chance Meeting At The Rodeo

When we are out in public places, such as stores, or out in the Community, like last week at the Fair and Rodeo, Sister Anderson is a much better missionary than I am. She talks to everyone, and in watching her interact with people, I have decided people like the fact that they are noticed. Sometimes I kind of chuckle at the questions she asks people, but it seems to work.
We had purchased tickets to the Rodeo to support the granddaughter of a friend we met at the Clubhouse.  His granddaughter was running for Rodeo Queen and the person who sells the most tickets becomes the queen.

We went to the Rodeo early, because it was hot and Sister Anderson wanted to be sure we got a good seat that was in the shade. Both the heat and humidity were pretty high that evening. There we were, sitting on the bleachers and waving and saying hi to people we knew as they came in.

We saw a friend come in with two of her children and waved. This is a person we have gotten to know, through her neighbor, who we visit often, and through her husband’s parents, who we have taught with the missionaries. We have also taught her husband with the missionaries once at his parents and once at his home, but in each case, she was not present during those discussions. She is Catholic and her husband grew up Protestant.

When this person came in to the Rodeo with her two boys, Sister Anderson yells to her and asks if we will see her this fall at the Elementary School. She looked a little troubled by the question. When we were teaching her husband’s parents with the young Elders, last winter, she was gone during the week over a 3 or 4 month period attending a police academy, training to become a police officer. Her husband drove a truck so the children were staying at the grandparents at the time.  Toward the end of the school year, this lady was working as the School Resource officer at the Elementary School where we served as reading buddies.  We just assumed that she would be back in that capacity in the fall.

We were sitting a number of rows up in the middle of the bleachers, and this lady comes up to talk with us.  She explained to us that she did not pass one little part of the Police Academy training; I believe it was the shooting part, and so she would not be able to continue on the police force.  I could see her disappointment as she explained that to us. She and her husband are both really impressive people that seem to have their priorities right. They are both good dedicated parents to their children.
That evening I received the impression that we should go and see her the next day and show her the video about Hugh B Brown not getting the promotion to General.

So the next day we planned to see her, as well as her husband’s parents who we had met with several weeks earlier, and who I had completed some family history fan charts for. As we were driving past the clubhouse pool, Sister Anderson thought she saw in the distance one of this lady's sons at the pool. Sure enough as we pulled into the clubhouse parking lot we saw this mom watching her sons who were swimming in the pool.  We were able to visit with her and share with her this video and tell her that Heavenly Father likely has something else in mind for her. We told her how much we admire her and her husband for the dedicated parents they are.
