One of the
families that we have become very fond of while serving here in the mission is
the Kueser family. They have 13 children but only one daughter still living at
home. This is the young lady Sister Anderson refers to as her adopted
daughter. This daughter is the only member of the church in her school; we try
to provide support by attending some of her athletic events plus we really
enjoy this family. This family has invited us out to their home on several
occasions and we always feel a good spirit there.
A couple of weeks ago, their youngest son who had been out in Utah attending BYU, spoke in Sacrament meeting prior to leaving on a mission to Brazil. Then last Sunday, the father spoke in Sacrament meeting and told a little of his conversation story. He said that he grew up Catholic and for most of his life lived just a few blocks from the Catholic Church. He said that he was very active and curious as a child and he had a friend who suggested he should get involved with the Catholic Church. He said that for years he either attended or assisted with Mass several times each week. As a young man he received training from the priest and others appointed to provide instruction on the doctrine and teachings of the Catholic Church. He mentioned that he always had lots of questions, he was viewed as kind of a troublemaker, but he said he was not trying to cause trouble; he just had lots of questions.
He said that one day the individual who was teaching these lessons came into the store where he was working and started up a conversation with him. It was a slow day and so they were able to talk. He explained that he was able to convince this Catholic Instructor that he was not trying to make trouble and that he just had a lot of questions. Some of what was being taught was not making sense to him. It sounded like some of his questions had to do with their description of the trinity. This instructor then shared with Brother Kueser an experience he had during the war. During combat and while under attack, this instructor was stuck in a foxhole for several days where he did not dare lift his head above ground for fear of being shot. He was praying for help from God and all of a sudden a book landed in his foxhole. It turned out to be the Book of Mormon, he said that he read the book and became convinced that it was true. He said that after he returned home from the war, the Catholic Priest convinced him that the Book of Mormon was not correct.
Brother Kueser said this happened before he had ever met his wife or knew anything about the Church, but that he remembered the story. He said that later when he had found the missionaries and they were able to answer all of his questions to his satisfaction, it was like coming home. He was so excited for the truths that he had found, and was able to fully embrace the gospel.
