On Monday, as I got into
the shower I noticed a red thing about the size of a small nail head sticking
out from my leg. I did not feel any pain or itching but suspected that it might
be a tick. Upon closer examination, I decided that was exactly what it was and
the reason it looked red was his abdomen was full of my blood. Sister Anderson
had this idea that if you put a hot match on the ticks rear end it will back
out, in fact I seem to think we were taught that in scouting years ago, but
that didn’t seem to work so she pulled the little critter out with a pair of
tweezers.
A lot of the people out here talk about the need to watch out for ticks but that was my first experience with one since being out on the mission. I think most of the time they are not harmful but there was a person in the neighboring county that died from a tick bite last summer. It was a big thing on the news.

We
were returning home late Monday evening, after dark, and were about 4 miles out of
town. All of a sudden I see a possum right in front of our car between the two head
lights. I was not able to stop in time
to allow him to get out of the way, so I attempted to straddle him, however we
did hear a thump, so I suspect we had our first road kill. These country roads
out here are pretty dark at night, plus I don’t think I see as well in the dark
as I did when I was younger. We actually should be very thankful because we
have had a number of near misses with deer since being out here, but have been
blessed not to hit one.
