Kansas City Royals Win World Series

Many of the people we know out here are big Kansas City Royals fans and so over the last several weeks with the league playoffs and the World Series going on almost every night, it has been a little difficult to make some of our normal visits. Everyone was pretty happy about the Royals winning the World Series. We didn’t watch any of the games; however, I did look up the scores since I knew that is what everyone would be talking about and didn’t want to come across as completely unaware of what is going on.

I was told that Major League Baseball has a rule that the team winning the World Series has to hold a celebration parade within 48 hours following the final game. So the Kansas City Mayor scheduled the parade for Tuesday at 2:00. They had 800,000 people turn out for the parade; they even closed the schools up in the City for this event. I was a little shocked about that. It took a friend of ours who works up in the City 5 hours to get home, the normal commute is an hour and a half. My impression is that our country is way too obsessed with its sports teams. I am probably guilty of not keeping a proper balance when it comes to BYU football and basketball. However, I have been able to keep a little better balance while on the mission.

I was thinking to myself the other day, what if an announcement was made that the Savior was returning, would they close the schools?  I suppose that would depend on who made the announcement and how believable the announcement was.  However closing the schools may not be necessary since some people speculate the Savior will return on a Sunday. Maybe he will choose Super Bowl Sunday!  In reality if such an announcement was made, it may not be all that believable since the Savior’s return is to be as a thief in the night.

I thought I would look up what scripture used the phrase as a thief in the night. I was a little surprised to find it in several scriptural passages:

·        JST, Luke 12:44

44 And now, verily I say these things unto you, that ye may know this, that the coming of the Lord is as a thief in the night.

·        1 Thessalonians 5:2

2 For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

·        Doctrine and Covenants 106:4

4 And again, verily I say unto you, the coming of the Lord draweth nigh, and it over taketh the world as a thief in the night

·        2 Peter 3:10

10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

·        Doctrine and Covenants 45:19

19 But, verily I say unto you, that desolation shall come upon this generation as a thief in the night, and this people shall be destroyed and scattered among all nations.

Kansas City Royals make it to the World Series

The big news out here is the Kansas City Royals made it to the World Series so all the baseball fans are really excited. The last time they played in the World Series was 1985, 29 years ago. I am not a big baseball fan, but for conversational purposes I am able to share with them that one of the pitchers for the Royals, Jeremy Guthrie went to BYU and Stanford and is a member of the Church. Actually he is a fairly well off member of the Church, he has a three year contract with the Royals for 25 million.
I am amazed at the amount of money professional athletes make.
