A Drive Around The Lake, Rabbits Aplenty
Thursday
evening, our appointment with our Evangelical friend fell through, so we took a
drive around the lake. The lake has a number of fingers and it seems like all
the roads right around the lake have the same name, even though they are not
necessarily connected. So we thought we would take that drive to better orient
ourselves with the area. That evening, we spotted 43
rabbits, 6 of them little bunnies. Sister Anderson calls all of them bunnies
but the baby rabbits were pretty cute. We do see one or two rabbits on our back
lawn most evenings.

Snapping Turtles, Cicadas and Rabbits
In the past week we have
seen 3 Snapping Turtles crossing the road. I read up on them a little and they
can get pretty big, and can live up to 100 years. One of our investigators said
they can bite off a finger.

The cicadas are
plentiful this year and very loud as we walk around the lake.

Millions of Noisy, Rare Cicadas Emerge
in Kansas After 17 Years
Millions of cicadas have
emerged from the ground in central Kansas, capping off a 17-year lifespan
spent, in large part, burrowed in the dirt.
The tiny, red-eyed insects
spend the better part of two decades below ground – feeding on tree roots for
nutrition and undergoing five phases of development – before returning to the
surface, where they make their presence known, loudly, much to the chagrin of
nearby humans.
“The sound is deafening,”
associate professor Jason Griffin of Kansas State University told ABC News,
“and the people get pretty frustrated.”
